A beach maternity photoshoot is a beautiful way to document this season of your life. The open shoreline, soft light, and natural movement create photographs that feel romantic and full of emotion. With thoughtful planning, your session can also feel relaxed and comfortable.
If you are wondering how to plan a beach maternity photoshoot, here are my recommendations for choosing the right time, outfit, location, and items to bring.
I usually recommend scheduling maternity photos around 25–32 weeks. During this time, the bump is prominent, but the mother is hopefully still comfortable enough to walk, pose, and enjoy the experience.
Every pregnancy is different, so comfort should always come first. Planning your session in advance also gives us enough time to choose a location, coordinate outfits, and prepare for the weather.
I plan beach maternity sessions during golden hour, typically beginning about one hour before sunset. The light is softer and more flattering at this time of day. Beaches also tend to be less crowded, creating a quieter and more intimate setting for your photos.
Sunset light adds warmth to the skin and gives the water and sky a soft glow. It is especially beautiful for natural portraits, silhouettes, and photographs taken near the shoreline.
Flowy dresses create beautiful movement in the ocean breeze, while fitted dresses highlight the shape of the bump. A skirt paired with a simple top is another comfortable and flattering option.
Neutral and earthy colors photograph beautifully at the beach. Consider wearing:
I recommend avoiding neon colors, small busy patterns, and clothing with prominent logos. Bare feet usually look the most natural in the sand.
Partners should coordinate with the overall color palette without matching exactly. Choosing complementary colors and simple clothing helps create a cohesive look while allowing each person to maintain their own style.
Bringing a few practical items can help you stay comfortable and prepared throughout the session:
Keep personal items simple and intentional. Meaningful details can make the session more personal, but they should not distract from your connection and the beauty of this season.
Before every beach session, I check the sunset time, tides, weather, parking, beach access, and how crowded the location usually becomes. These details help us choose the best time and meeting place while avoiding unnecessary stress on the day of the session.
Beach weather can be unpredictable, especially when it comes to wind. Instead of expecting every strand of hair to remain perfectly in place, I encourage clients to embrace the natural movement. The wind often makes the photographs feel softer, more romantic, and more authentic.
The right beach depends on the scenery and overall feeling you want for your maternity photos.
In Virginia Beach, I recommend Sandbridge and Chic’s Beach. Florida options include Naples, Sarasota, Anna Maria Island, Fort De Soto, and quieter Gulf Coast beaches around Tampa and Southwest Florida.
Some locations offer soft dunes and open shoreline, while others include greenery, rocks, or a more tropical Florida setting. Together, we can choose a beach that complements your vision and creates the right backdrop for your family.
Your maternity session should feel comfortable, meaningful, and true to you. Whether you envision a flowy dress moving in the breeze, quiet family moments near the water, or playful photographs along the shoreline, I would love to document this season of your life.
